A brief history of learning and books for children, beginning with Ango-Saxon Britain, written for young children.
Opening paragraph:
LONG, LONG ago, when your grand- mama, your great-great... (I don't know how many greats) grandmama was a little girl, she lived on the other side of the sea. If you go down to the shore in the summer, you'll see that ocean with the boats sailing on it, and sometimes you'll see them disappear over the edge and seem to drop into nowhere. One day, maybe, when you're big, you'll get into one of those ships, and sail away to another country, called Eng- land. Then you'll know that the ships don't really fall over the edge, but go round the side of the big ball we call the Earth, so that we can't see them any more.
