Formerly published in two volumes, subtitled Inheritance and Bequest, these tell the story of Zoltan Galambos, a student in Hungary between the World Wars and during WWII. In them, he strives to get an education, battling poverty, his father's displeasure, and his own pride. Eventually, as a grown man, he takes over an orphanage of thirty boys, and for a time he works to gain control of the wild group and to meet their needs. But Europe is on the brink of World War II, and Hungary is inevitably drawn into the conflict. Zoli, now a husband and father, becomes a soldier and the sole strength of many people. Even after the war is over and Hungary is occupied by the Russians, Zoli must consider his loved ones and make some life-changing decisions.
