Windermere Series

Rand McNally produced a number of beautiful books from the early 1900s to the 1950s called The Windermere Series, many of them featuring the stunning art of Milo Winter. The series has had several renditions over the years.

There were eleven titles published in the first format (Series 1); these books were published in the 1910s with buckram gold or green cloth covers:

  1. Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass (Milo Winter, 14 ill)
  2. Andersen's Fairy Tales (Milo Winter, 14 ill)
  3. Arabian Nights (Milo Winter, 16 ill)
  4. Grimm's Fairy Tales (Just called Fairy Tales in the catalog) (Hope Dunlap, 12 ill)
  5. Gulliver's Travels (Milo Winter, 12 ill)
  6. Ivanhoe (Milo Winter, 14 ill)
  7. Robinson Crusoe (Milo Winter, 16 ill)
  8. Swiss Family Robinson (Milo Winter, 14 ill)
  9. Tanglewood Tales (Milo Winter, 10 ill)
  10. Treasure Island (Milo Winter. 14 ill)
  11. Wonder-Book (Milo Winter, 14 ill)

There were two batches with blue covers (Series 2, Series 3), published in the early and later 1920s. These often had fewer illustrations than the first editions, but were still lovely copies. Rand McNally printed 17 titles, adding to the above list:

  1. Adventures of Remi (Mead Schaeffer)
  2. Heidi (Maginel Wright Enright)
  3. King Arthur and His Knights (Mead Schaeffer and John R. Neill)
  4. Robin Hood (Dan Content)
  5. The Three Musketeers (Milo Winter)
  6. Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Milo Winter)

The black hardcovers with silver spines (Series 4) were published in the 1930s. In this series, the publishers added:

  1. Adventures of Perrine (Milo Winter)
  2. Hans Brinker (Milo Winter)
  3. Jungle Babies (Paul Bransom and in b&w by Don Nelson)
  4. Kidnapped (Milo Winter, Paul Strayer)
  5. Pinocchio (Esther Friend)
  6. Tales of India (Paul Strayer)

The "Windermere Readers," released in the 1950s, included most of the above 23 titles (there are some sets numbered on the spine), but removed Ivanhoe, Robin Hood, and Jungle Babies. A few of these were done in paperback, but we're not sure how many.
