Accomplished illustrator/nature writer Dot Barlowe takes us on an informative and beautiful walk through the woods during the four seasons of the year. We begin our explorations in the early spring, when we see a woodchuck emerging from his long winter sleep to enjoy some tender grass shoots. Next we see flora (skunk cabbage, wildflowers) and other fauna (spring peepers, wood frog) of the season. As we move through the book we experience the woods in summer, fall and winter, seeing and learning about dozens of plants and animals and about their interdependence. With great artistic and verbal skill, Mrs. Barlowe creates a superb introduction to one of our major ecosystems. Dover Original. 5 color illustrations on covers.
