Veritas Omnibus V

Having advanced form the Logic stage to the Rhetoric, Omnibus is back for Middle Ages round two. It’s been three years since your students studied the Middle Ages, and if they’ve journeyed with Omnibus from the beginning, they’ve had four years total of the Omnibus boot camp. In other words, they’ve (hopefully) matured. They’ve grown in their understanding of the world around them, become skilled in identifying and refuting false philosophies, and by now have a solid Christian worldview. They are capable of understanding and reasoning at a higher level, and because history is something you can never study too much, Omnibus repeats itself so that your students can get even more out of history than they did before.

For this year’s Primary book list, your students will take on heavy works like St. Augustine’s City of God, Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy, Aquinas’s Summa Theologica, Calvin’s Institutes, and they will also complete Dante’s Divine Comedy that they started in Omnibus I. The Secondary booklist includes the Koran, Don Quixote, Othello, and the Great Divorce. For each book, there is an introductory essay explaining the background and basic ideas of the book. This is followed by daily sessions the student can work thorough, consisting of questions, activities, and assignments that help the student learn to understand and communicate ideas thoroughly, eloquently, and from a solid Christian worldview. In the new Session, the Student-lead Discussion, the students create their own questions on a given topic instead of answering questions given in the book.

If you've used Omnibus before, you’ve already had a year of Church history. You know that though the works produced during the era were written by Christians in a predominantly Christian culture, there are many things to look out for and many false teachings. This is a huge year of learning as you discover not only many great truths, but also new blunders and mistakes. Appreciate the fact that if we study these great works and analyze them by the light of scripture, we don’t have to make the same mistakes our forefathers did. Omnibus V is the second-to last year of this curriculum, and takes the task of training the next generation of Christians to a challenging new level as it nears completion.
