From the dust jacket:

'The world over the name of Kate Greenaway holds the mystery and magic of a familiar fairy tale in many a household and in those libraries and schools and bookshops where her picture books have been cherished and freshly explored by one generation after another,' wrote Anne Carroll Moore in A Century of Kate Greenaway.

Edmund Evans, the engraver and colour printer, was so impressed with Kate Greenaway's drawings and verses which were to become Under the Window that he purchased them on sight, and later was ridiculed for risking an edition of 20,000 copies. But his judgement was proved sound when the figure of 70,000 was reached on reprinting. Under the Window was published in 1878, and it continues to delight and fascinate.
