The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!
Treve, golden-tawny collie of the Dos Hermanos sheep ranch, is the hero of this book, in which a straying sheep and would- be dog thief, rustlers and a sheep-killing wolf also play a prominent part. Always Treve does his duty and with uncanny collie skill protects the interest of his two gods, young Mack and grouchy old Fenno. The latter, at first detesting the sight and sound of Treve, gradually succumbs to his lovable traits and finally acknowledges his fondness openly. For Treve faces danger again and again and gallantly meets jealousy, suspicion and grief.
Treve is a hero, yet he always remains a dog—a dog with a superb intelligence, caring for "foolish, non-dependable" sheep. He cannot talk yet through Mr. Terhune's genius one is able to understand him perfectly and to love him.
—from the dust jacket
Terhune penned many books about the dogs he kept and trained on the Sunnybank estate throughout the 1920s and 30s. When Terhune found Treve at a dog show he was looking for a new stud to put his collies in the hunt for championships. Terhune bought him and brought him home and found him to be slightly peculiar. Treve would try to be mean and fierce but his lovable, kind gentle nature always won out.
