Hoxie and Irene Chubfish, ages 10 and 13, visit their newly discovered great-aunt Della who lives on the Oregon Coast. Della speaks the language of her Nehalem tribe and the Chinook trading language, but no English. Slowly Hoxie and Irene remember Chinook, their first language. When Hoxie learns that Della may lose her home, he decides to hunt for the legendary treasure in Neahkahnie Mountain. With the help of his aunt's legends and information from the townspeople, Hoxie and Irene go treasure hunting. They find more than treasure. They find new friends, an unknown family heritage, and the answer to Della's difficulties.
