Thomas W. Harvey, born in 1821, is author of the grammar textbook series
Harvey's Language Course. Harvey grew up in New Hampshire and Ohio, and it was in the latter state that he began his career as a school superintendent in 1851. He was superintendent in Massillon and Painesville until 1871, when he was pronounced Ohio State Commissioner of Public Schools. Harvey's most memorable contributions to education are his work with grammar textbooks, including editing McGuffey's readers as well as his own texts (such as
Elementary Grammar and
First Lessons in Language). Harvey died in 1892, widely know for his skills as a teacher, lecturer and writer, a Christian man, and above all his passion for education.
