None of them were great or famous, but they were strong and good. They worked hard and had many children. They all helped to make the United States the great nation that it now is. Let us be proud of them and guard well the heritage they have left us.

Robert Lawson's Caldecott medal winner Strong and Good is the charmingly-told story of his family history. Starting with his mother's father (a Scotch sea captain) and ending with his own father (a young Confederate soldier) he gives us the story of his parent's parents and of his own parents, what they did and how they met.

The simple line-drawings illustrate the years of American history that passed during these two generations as they built, worked, and fought, married and lived and thrived. Robert Lawson's ancestors were not great or famous, but they were the kind of strong and good people that built America, and for that reason he is proud of his heritage.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
