There had never been a crocodile in St. Petersburg before. So of course everyone was excited.
As the author Fyodor Dostoevsky tells it, he and Ivan and Ivan's wife, Elena, went with the crowd to see the strange beast. Ivan hitched up the sleigh, and soon they were there. Ivan was so delighted he paid for all three to get into the crocodile department. And once inside, he moved closer and closer to the fence that separated him from the marvelous animal.
Well, to make a long story short, Ivan got too close and wound up inside the crocodile, a really uncomfortable place to be, at least until you get used to it. But for those of us outside, what happened after makes a very funny story (which is why the author wrote it). After all, how many people carry on an active social life from inside a crocodile?
