Trapped in Paris, their good friend Mr. Lorry, and Sydney Carton, the gentleman wastrel who has always loved Lucie, try vainly to stem the tide of hatred that ultimately condemns Charles to death on the guillotine. Then Sydney Carton's supreme sacrifice climaxes a magnificent story that has held three generations of readers spellbound with its dramatic action.
