There once was an old woman who lived by herself at the edge of the forest. She had outlived her family, and the villagers gradually forgot all about her. There was no one to keep her company in her old age. On Christmas eve the old woman went to her door and looked up at the stars. Then she thrust back her head and shouted, "Just once! I'd like to celebrate a Christmas. Is that too much to ask?" Then she went to bed. On that winter night, up in the sky, another voice echoed the old woman's plea. "Just once," said Star Mother's Youngest Child, "I want to celebrate Christmas the way they do down there." And so on Christmas day a cranky old woman encounters an ugly child, and together they share one unforgettable Christmas.
