O all ye works of the Lord.
bless ye Lord:
praise him and magnify
him forever
Thus begins The Song of the Three Holy Children. This joyous hymn of praise appears in the Apocrypha, as an addition to the book of Daniel. It was sung by Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, three Jewish captives in Babylon who refused to worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. As punishment for their refusal, they where bound and thrown into the fiery furnace, only to be saved by an angel who kept the flames from touching them.
Now, this exhortation to all creatures to praise the Lord has been illustrated and illuminated by the renowned artist Pauline Baynes. Her colorful paintings, with their intricate borders, recall the beauty of early Spanish illuminated manuscripts. The Song of the Three Holy Children is a picture book to be read and treasured by people of any creed and any age.
