Did you ever sing the folk song "Barbary Allen" or "Big Rock Candy Mountain"? Everyone in the Marvell family loved these mountain songs and all six boys could sing them beautifully except Absolom, the youngest. He made up songs, but sang them only to his pet coon, named Barbary Allen. There was much arguing among the brother because the oldest, Gar, was entering the Song Swapping contest and the prize was one hundred dollars - a lot of money. Everyone in the family had a suggestion. One day when Absolom was singing his own song to his pet coon, Gar overheard him. How do you think the people on Sour Cherry Ridge reacted when Gar sang it? You can try it, too - the words and music are in the book.
