The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

"Except for one thing that noise was like thunder. It never ceased." So begins the new book by John R. Tunis. It is the story of the terrible days in 1940 when the Battle of France ended and the British Expeditionary Force was pushed into the sea at Dunkerque; of Sergeant Williams, waiting helplessly with his men on the beach; of the Sergeant's twin boys in England, who joined the flotilla of small boats that sailed across the Channel in an almost hopeless task of rescue.

When the evacuation was over, the guns stopped, and there was silence over Dunkerque. But Sergeant Williams, one of his men, and the homeless Airedale they had adopted were left behind, marooned in an occupied country, with only a young French girl and the dog's devotion to help them.

This is a story of war and of courage—courage in many uniforms, and sometimes no uniform at all. It is an almost unbearably suspenseful book, inspiring testimony to the unquenchable human spirit.
