Amos Mcgee rises early every morning and takes the bus to the city zoo. There he spends the day taking care of his animal friends. He plays chess with the elephant, races with the tortoise, and sits quietly with the shy penguin. But one day Amos Mcgee wakes up sick. Now it's his turn to be taken care of by his friends.

Published in 2010, Sick Day for Amos McGeeis nevertheless a book that feels like a classic the first time you read it.Erin Stead's illustrations were made first with woodblock printing and then filled in with pencil. The pastel colors complement the gentle nature of the story. The instantly likable Amos Mcgee has a Mr. Rogers feel to him, especially in the way he befriends the humanlike animals. This is a very sweet story about a man who serves others selflessly and has that love and service reciprocated, and its perhaps this timeless message, combined with the beautifully simple illustrations, that gives this book its classic feel—and will no doubt make it a classic in years to come.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
