For Self-Reliance and Other Essays, Emerson drew from his own lectures and journal entries, processing his thoughts on self-reliance as a virtue. To be fulfilled, Emerson believed that one must follow his own dreams and desires, avoiding conformity to society. For Emerson, freedom lay within grasp if one relied on oneself for purpose and growth. Students will have to decide for themselves if and where Emerson’s ideas appeal to truth.
