The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

It was a magical morning when the lobster man showed Toby and Joe the egg-shaped stone he had found in his catch. They loved it instantly and wanted it desperately. After it became theirs, they placed the egg in a sheltered pool of sea water that could be reached only at low tide through a tunnel in the headland. There they hoped that whatever it might be—sea serpent, sea ogre, sea genie, or perhaps a sea horse—could hatch in secrecy and safety, protected from the full force of the sea by immovable barriers of rock.

Then—after the egg had hatched—began a time of wonder and joy and fulfillment for Toby and Joe. With the companion that the sea had given them, the two young brothers learned to swim like sea creatures themselves, diving, treading water, riding on waves with a confidence they had never known before. It was on the last night of Toby and Joe's holiday that their companion shared with them the most remarkable experience of all—one that by its very uncommonness affirmed forever their belief in their unusual comrade.

L. M. Boston, author of the distinguished Green Knowe books, has set this haunting story on the Cornish coast and has evoked a summer at the sea with memorable beauty and magic.
