A biography of the man who became a great Dutch admiral a few years after the Reformation and during the middle of Holland's 80 Year War with Spain.
The book tells his story from the time he first became a sailor at fourteen (in 1618), throughout his career, during the war with England and France under Charles II, and then as he commanded the Dutch fleet under William III, Prince of Orange.
