Through her father's foolish boast, the poor but beautiful miller's daughter is forced to spin straw into gold for the king at the threat of her life. The only problem is, she has no idea how! To her rescue comes a strange little mad who offers to do it for her. The king, impressed with the skill of the miller's daughter, marries her. But the little man's price comes back to haunt the new Queen, for in return for spinning the gold, the little man asks for the life of the Queen's first child. Unless she can guess the little man's name at the end of three days, the Queen will have to give up her baby to repay her debt. Is there any way she can find out his name before?
Paul Galdone's simple, earthy drawings make for a charming rendition of this classic tale.
