The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

The twenty-eight stories in this book have been drawn from the different counties of England and retold in a simple, vivid style that recaptures the oral traditions from which they sprang. The stories range from the comic, such as Jack Buttermilk from Nottinghamshire, to the sad, like the Suffolk story, Brother Mike, but whether funny or sad, fantastic or tragic, these stories from the rich folk-tale heritage of English-speaking people will be enjoyed by children of all ages.

Eileen Colwell, a noted authority on folk tales and story-telling to children, has drawn these stories from collections of folklore made from oral tradition. She has retained the directness and flavor of the original versions while, at the same time, retelling them in a more modern idiom so that present-day children may enjoy them as much as their ancestors did so long ago.

Some of these stories will be familiar to an American audience, but many will be new to it. The rich variety of tales, handsomely illustrated by Anthony Colbert's lino-cuts, combine to make a book to be read and reread and treasured by young and old.
