The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

Queenie Peavy was a puzzle to everyone but herself. She knew why she fired stones at anything and everything–wasn't she the best shot in Georgia? She knew why she was defiant with her teachers and deliberately mean to her school-mates–weren't they all against her? And Queenie didn't care–not Queenie Peavy!

The fact was that Queenie had a chip on her shoulder too big for a lonely thirteen-year-old to carry. Times had "turned off hard" for everybody in the early 1930s, and they were especially hard for a girl whose idolized father was in jail and whose mother worked long hours.

But in spite of all that, Queenie could be happy, for Queenie had character.

Robert Burch's story of a girl growing up in the depression years in Georgia is funny and touching and infinitely wise.
