A young French Canadian boy, who wants an accordion more than anything, attaches a note telling of his wish to a Christmas tree which will be sold in the United States.

*******************

Ten-year-old Bebert Caron lived with his family on a small dairy farm in the Eastern Townships of Canada. Although the Carons were well fed and warm enough, Bebert understood that money was scarce and that it would be impossible for his parents to give him what he most wanted for Christmas—a real accordion.

So it seemed to him an excellent idea to attach a letter to one of the Christmas trees the Carons cut for shipment to the United States—a letter saying that he was a poor boy whose father could not afford to buy him an accordion. Bebert almost cried as he wrote the letter about this pitiful boy; it was as though he were writing about someone else.

The letter was the beginning of everything that was first terrible and then wonderful. Because of it Bebert learned that being rich is not as important as being able to give in return for what you receive. Natalie Savage Carlson's many fans will love this distinctive story with its beautiful and perceptive drawings by John Kaufmann.
