The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. Though the novel does not specifically state the dates of its story, Pran of Albania is nevertheless a historical novel set in the early nineteenth century Albania. It tells the story of a fourteen-year-old girl, Pran, a daughter of the sturdy mountain tribes of Northern Albania who, by ancient tribal tradition, is old enough to be betrothed.  This is the story of her life in the mountains and the refugee barracks at Skodra; of her friend, the laughing blue-eyed Nush and his secret; of her adventures in war times and peace, of her betrothal and the strange vow she takes. In order to avoid an arranged marriage, she follows local custom in taking a vow to be a "sworn virgin" and to live as a man. The novel, illustrated by Maud and Miska Petersham, was first published in 1929 and was a Newbery Honor recipient in 1930.
