The mid-nineteenth century brought great disruption to a young American nation. The Great Civil War lasted from 1861-1865 and is considered the most devastating war in American history due to the great loss of human lives and destruction of the land. This conflict—the North vs. the South, Union vs. Confederate, Yankee vs. Rebel—pitted a nation against itself.
Wilmer McLean, the character Will in Runs from Guns was an eyewitness to the war in its outset and conclusion. The Battle of Bull Run—the first major battle in 1861—was fought in Manassas Junction, Virginia, the site of McLean's farm. After his house had been wrecked by the fighting, Wilmer decided to move his family away from the battlefront and purchased property in the quiet Virginian town of Appomattox Court House. Ironically, his was the house in which Gen. Lee officially surrendered the Confederate Army to Gen. Grant four years later on April 9, 1865. McLean was quoted to say, "The war began in my front yard and ended in my parlor."
The Civil War was fought in many places across the nation, from Virginia to New Mexico, from Vermont to Florida. More than 3 million Americans fought in it, and over 600,000 died in it. Wilmer McLean's story aptly illustrates that real people lived through the war and were changed by the event.
