There are 75 volumes in the series, which rely on journals, letters, advertisements, essays, poems, newspaper accounts, songs, cartoons, maps, illustrations, and photos. Representative titles include Life in the American Colonies, Indians of the Southwest, The Underground Railroad, The Lowell Mill Girls, and The Vietnam War. Other volumes cover the immigrant experience, America at war, the civil rights movement, technology development, and political and religious history.
