The real Thursday Next's more gentle fictional counterpart failed her Jurisfiction exam. Now she spends her days trying to keep her series as close to the spirit of Thursday Next as possible, and enjoying the new views in the updated Bookworld. Yet with the Thursday Next series being unpopular and unread, the horrible possibility of remaindering always looms close. But soon fictional Thursday will have a lot worse things than remaindering to worry about.

First she recieves a mysterious phone call from Commander Herring. Then a hairy man on the bus hands her the ID badge of the real Thursday Next. A sarcastic mechanical man named Sprockett becomes her butler, and Thursday may be asked to impersonate the real Thursday Next at a peacekeeping mission up the Metaphorical River. As the strange incidences pile up, fictional Thursday Next realizes that one of our Thursdays is missing, and that it may be up to her to fill the real Thursday's shoes and save the day.

Trouble seems to follow those with the name of Thursday Next, and its no different for our new heroine. The change from the usual POV character to a new "fictional" one is actually rather refreshing. Set almost completely in the Bookworld,One of Our Thursdays is Missingretains the spirit of the series while offering a fresh take.

Jasper Fforde has way too much fun dreaming up odd situations that occur in Thursday's trek through the Bookworld. This book is rife with puns and wordplay, even more so than his previous offerings. And though the fictional Thursday is not as witty or sarcastic as the real Thursday, the longer she impersonates her the moreshe begins to take on some of her traits; her quick thinking, compassion, and courage.

Review by Lauren Shearer
Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
