The purpose of this selected edition of Thomas North's translation of Plutarch's "Lives" is to present those biographies which reveal both Plutarch and North at their very best. In the selection process, three principal criteria have been kept in mind: the historical significance of the subjects; the sympathy, understanding, and familiarity with which Plutarch dealt with them; and the fidelity cum Elizabethan vigor and stately power of phrase which North employed, and which Shakespeare was content to borrow on more than one occasion.
