Summer Reading is Here! | May Newsletter

Summer is almost here! Many of you are looking forward to our summer reading challenge (so are we!). This year, because we received so much good feedback via our customer survey, we're changing how the challenge works.

In the past we've handed out prizes to the kids who read the most books. While that's a worthy goal, you've helped us realize that it puts pressure on kids to read all the time when they could (and should) be outside.

This year, we're trying something different. Every kid who reads the minimum goal of five books will still get a $5 gift certificate, but we're giving away just one larger prize per grade level. This prize won't necessarily go to the kid with the most books read, but will be awarded by random drawing. Kids who reach all the challenge goals for their grade level (see the contest rules for details) will be given one entry in the drawing. Additional reading will net them more entries.

To further take the focus off "winning," we're introducing the genre challenge. Kids will be encouraged to read a variety of books within specific genres or that fit defined criteria, such as "a sci-fi story written in the 19th century," or "a book where a character moves away." (see the genre page for details.)
