The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent condition, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

Narcissa Whitman was one of the first two white women to cross the American continent. Beautiful, blonde-haired, courageous, this girl in her twenties married a young doctor and set out with him in 1836 from her home in New York State for the almost unknown western country which is now Oregon. Theirs was a great purpose—to educate the Indian tribes of that region, and their story is a moving chapter in the record of human bravery and idealism.

The journey itself was formidable enough to deter most women. Beyond St. Louis nearly two thousand miles of wilderness lay between them and their goal. But the Whitmans did reach Oregon and there they established a mission which became one of the first outposts of civilization in the Northwest.

Narcissa Whitman kept a journal and wrote many letters to her family and friends far away in the East. Sometimes it took a year or more for the letters to arrive; sometimes they never reached their destination. But Narcissa's journals, the letters she wrote, and the contemporary memoirs describing her and Marcus Whitman are still available. From this material Jeanette Eaton has woven the touching and inspiring story of a great American woman.
