The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

The beguiling little world that Mrs. Thirkell has created –a world in which the most familiar sound is a chuckle and where even the tears have charm –comes to life again in her new novel. We are sure that no section of the English countryside is quite so agreeable as Mrs. Thirkell's Barsetshire, and we suspect that nowhere else are there so many agreeable ladies and gentlemen –but to Mrs. Thirkell's many thousands of readers, so much the worse for reality.

Miss Bunting, her central character. is a governess with the manners and the social wisdom of a queen, and around her are any number of delightful people, almost all of them merry, but even the rest managing somehow to live engagingly. The truth is that the characters who have something to sigh about find something to cheer them up by the time the story is finished. As for Miss Bunting herself, her end is peaceful and we take leave of her regretfully. She is a fine addition to her creator's remarkable gallery of portraits.
