Anna Hibiscus lives in Africa, but now she is going across the sea to visit her Granny Canada. She will see snow for the first time, go sledding and skating, and taste Canadian Christmas food. But Anna is worried. Her grandfather says to stay away from dogs. They are smelly and vicious and have worms. They travel in packs and eat garbage. But Granny Canada has a dog! What will Anna Hibiscus do?
The fun and funny adventures of Anna Hibiscus continue in this fourth book. Anna learns how hard it is to say good-bye, that dogs can be friends, even best friends, how to tell who is or is not a true (human!) friend, and how to speak up for herself.
Anna experiences some significant culture shock traveling from Africa to Canada. That alone is a great reason to give this book to a child, who will get to see their own world through Anna Hibiscus' eyes. We love books that open both eyes and minds, and this is an excellent example.
