Mary O'Hara

Mary O'Hara

O'Hara was born July 10, 1885, in Cape May Point, New Jersey, to a reverend and his wife. A descendant of William Penn, O'Hara grew up in New York. She married a man and had two children, only one of which survived into adulthood. Following the dissolution of this marriage, O'Hara worked in the silent film industry as a screenwriter. During this time, she re-married and eventually the couple moved to Wyoming and bought a cattle and horse ranch. Over the summer, the ranch served as a camp for Eastern prep school boys on vacation. When she wasn't working on the ranch, O'Hara was writing children's books such as My Friend Flicka. After divorcing her second husband and moving back East, O'Hara began a new career as a talented composer and pianist. Arteriosclerosis took this woman's life on October 14, 1980. O'Hara was 95 years old.
