MAMMALS OF GRAND CANYON

Donald F. Hoffmeister

Illustrated by James Gordon Irving

Here is the first detailed account of the seventy-four species of mammals found within Grand Canyon National Park at the present time – their habitats, behavior, and distribution. The great variation in topography and climatic conditions within the canyon, the isolation of the North from the South rims, and the isolation of the buttes within the canyon make the biota as interesting as the canyon itself. Mammals range from beaver and otter within the deepest part to red, Abert, and Kaibab squirrels in the coniferous forests; from desert-dwelling kangaroo rats to forest-dwelling meadow voles; from rarely seen shrews to often-seen deer.

For the seventy-four species known to be present, distribution is mapped and the probable range is shaded in. James Gordon Irving, a foremost nature artist, has illustrated the text with accurate drawings of nearly every species of mammal in the park. Information on both habits and habitats of each species is included, as well as a list of mammals that may be present. A key to aid in identification is provided, and localities where specimens have been collected and preserved are recorded.

DONALD F. HOFFMEISTER is professor of zoology and director of the Museum of Natural History at the University of Illinois.
