Many are children are familiar with the little locomotive, the first ever made for the New York Central Railroad, which for a number of years has had a place of honor in the waiting room of the Grand Central Station in New York City.
"Little Blacknose" is the life story of this engine. From his first moments in the foundry Blacknose has a definite personality. He shares with the crowds profound misgivings as to his ability to go at all when he is taken out for his trial run from Albany to Schenectady. He rejoices with his engineer when it is proved that he can not only go but make the amazing speed of eighteen miles an hour. He takes a natural pleasure in frightening the horses which have adopted toward him an annoying attitude of superiority. "Little Blacknose" is a delightful person, and his story, which might be called "fictional biography," is true in all its historic details.
