In this spirited adaptation of an Arthurian legend for young readers, Barbara Schiller recounts the exciting tale of Gareth of Orkney, who comes to King Arthur's court disguised as a youth and is made to serve a year as a kitchen scullion before he goes on a quest.
Gareth's courageous efforts on behalf of Lyoness, a fair young maiden in distress, are met with spite and scorn on the part of Lynet, the maiden's sister, who cannot adjust to the services of the mere "kitchen knight" assigned to save Lyoness from the evil Red Knight. Lynet's battles of wit with Gareth provide moments of humor, as well as the added incentive for Gareth to vanquish one powerful and wicked knight after another so he can rescue the fair Lyoness and prove himself worthy of knighthood in the yes of her sharp-tongued sister.
Al the spirit of medieval derring-do is sharply captured in the woodcuts by Nonny Hogrogian for this book, which is certain to delight all would-be knights who dream of performing valiant deeds.
