Patterson was a teacher at Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management before he went on to co-found Interact Performance Systems. At IPS he served as vice-president of research and development for ten years. Then he co-founded VitalSmarts which helps train people in business to work together and communicate better. Taking these concepts into written form, Patterson has authored and co-authored numerous articles and books, including Crucial Conversations and Crucial Confrontations. An awarded individual, Patterson received the Mentor of the Year Award and the 2004 William G. Dyer Distinguished Alumni Award from Brigham Young University.
