Born in New York City on August 16, 1898, Rodale grew up to become famous for making the word "organic" mean grown without pesticides. He emphasized health and foods grown organically. Believing that health and agriculture go hand-in-hand, Rodale founded Rodale, Inc. in 1930 and Rodale Press. As a publisher of Organic Farming & Gardening magazine, later renamed Organic Gardening, Rodale went on to create and publish the overwhelmingly popular Prevention magazine. An author and playwright as well, Rodale lived until age 72, dying on June 8, 1971.
