Historical Setting: Europe, 1695 A. D., Franco-Prussian War

When Sir Marmaduke Carstairs—a known Jacobite—and his son Charlie are falsely accused of plotting to assassinate King William, they flee to Sweden, where Charlie enlists in the Swedish army under the young Charles XII, King of Sweden. His bravery and quick-thinking soon come to the attention of the king, who sends him to Poland on a secret mission, which nearly costs him his life. Captured by the Russians at the Battle of Clissow, Charlie is exchanged under unusual circumstances, and finally makes his way back to England to find the only man who can clear his father of the charges hanging over him. When the estates of Sir Marmaduke are restored to him, Charlie enters the British army and serves under Marlborough in his struggle against the French, finally settling down with his cousin Ciceley at Lynnwood.
