IEW Literature & Poetry

The folks at IEW believe that memorized poetry used to be the mainstay of education, but is now truly a lost art. They are doing their part to reintroduce this vital source of linguistic patterning to students with Linguistic Development Through Poetry Memorization. With a new expanded edition in 2016, this course focuses on learning quick and accurate methods of memorizing poetry and speeches, and is designed to help your students’ communication skills and learning/information retention abilities. Following this, IEW has recommended (though they no longer do so officially) using The Grammar of Poetry, an introduction to poetry analysis and appreciation from Logos Press.

While it isn’t an IEW product, Adam and Missy Andrews’s Teaching the Classics literature program is highly recommended by IEW as a prelude to their own literature study products. TC is based on Socratic study methods in which teachers rigorously question students and lead them in discussion to illuminate the meaning and importance of literature; the course can be used with basically any age-level, and nearly any genre or type of literary work. Following this, IEW recommends Windows to the World (their literary analysis course); Worldview Detective, a worldview follow-up to TC also by the Andrews; and World, American, and British Literature—studies by Janice Campbell for high school students.
