Ian Falconer is a painter and illustrator whose illustrations have graced many covers of The New Yorker magazine. In addition to this, he has designed sets and costumes for the New York City Ballet, the San Francisco Opera, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, amongst others. Olivia, the tale of a precocious porcine heroine, is his first children's book. According to Mr. Falconer, he modeled the enduringly popular character of Olivia after his young niece (the rest of the characters are based on her parents, brother, and her dog and cat). Ian Falconer currently resides in New York City.
