This book is for the parent who wants to start preparing her child for reading early, but needs some practical help and encouragement to do so. Jan Pierce, a local author and a teacher for forty years, presents some practical, manageable tips for fostering a love of reading in very young children, and motivating those who are reading for the first time.
Among other things she stresses the importance of reading out loud to children, even if it's something you don't like to do. To this end she suggests a list of titles that are quality writing, not just cheap grocery store books (something we can certainly get behind.)
Learning to read is a process, and parents are encouraged not to rush children. If reading is made enjoyable early on it will be less of a chore later. The phonics-conscious parent should know that some of her tips for encouraging readers do come from more of a sight-word approach, but they are nonetheless helpful. Equally helpful are her tips for how to choose books for children based on their interests, and the many activities that bring the love of words home. The appendices are chock full of resources and web links.
In our honest opinion, this little book could be the reassurance some parents need to know that they're on the right track with their child's reading development, and the encouragement to keep reading out loud and modelling the love of reading.
