Helen Palmer

Helen Palmer

Palmer was born on September 11, 1899, and she later attended Oxford University. Her future husband, Theodor Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, also went to Oxford. The couple married in 1926 but had no children. A tremendous influence on her husband's life, she recommended that he become an artist and not a teacher. Returning to the United States, Geisel did just that, drawing magazine illustrations and advertisements for well-known major corporations, thus supporting them through the Great Depression. An actress and author herself, Palmer wrote books and combined photographs with them. Her book A Fish Out of Water, though, was illustrated by P.D. Eastman. During her mid-fifties, Palmer became increasingly ill, and after thirteen years of sicknesses and cancer, she died on October 23, 1967.
