Harry's summer holiday does not end well. After accidentally using magic on his uncle's terrible sister, Aunt Marge, Harry finds himself out on the streets with just a couple days left until the school term starts. Fortunately, he is picked up by an erratic magical bus and hitches a ride to Hogwarts with his good friends the Weasleys. Unfortunately, the dangerous criminal Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban, the wizarding world's highest security prison.

This means that the sinister dementors—joy-sucking wraith-guards of Azkaban—are patrolling not only the country but also Hogwarts itself. As Harry navigates the ups and downs of his third year at Hogwarts he must come face to face with the devious criminal who betrayed his parents to Lord Voldemort.

Harry's third turn at Hogwarts is fraught with some of the same problems as the previous installments. The biggest example: Harry needs his uncle to sign a permission slip in order to visit the nearby village of Hogsmeade during the school year. Harry's uncle agrees to sign it if Harry is well-behaved for Aunt Marge's visit. Aunt Marge mocks Harry's dead parents and Harry loses it. Later on, with no permission slip, Harry is forced to stay behind while his friends go to the village. However, his friend's mischievous brothers have a plan to sneak Harry into the village without being seen, a plan which Harry goes along with.

But it must be said that although he's never caught by the authorities, this does not end well for Harry. On the flip side, Harry learns more about love and sacrifice, particularly that of his parents and his parents' friends; he grows as a friend himself; he saves an innocent creature condemned to death; and he learns to find courage, even in the face of great evil.
