Gill Harvey is an Englishwoman with a penchant for ancient Egypt. She is extremely well-traveled; having grown up in Warwickshire, England and the hills of Wales, she left home at eighteen to roam and explore before going to school at Oxford, where she studied French and philosophy. Harvey rather stumbled upon her career as a children's author. After pursuing various occupations from mental health and environmental work to running an antiques stall, she decided to try her hand at writing. The result of this was a novel, with the misfortune that no publisher would accept it. Harvey then obtained a writing and editing position with Usborne Publishing, and since 1994 she has been immersed in the world of children's literature. Her own works include
Orphan of the Sun and Usborne's
Encyclopedia of the Ancient World. In the midst of her writing, much of which now involves freelance work, Harvey continues to travel, having developed a particular love for Africa. She resides in London.
