Foreword
PRIMITIVE gardening was the simplest of the arts–without technique and without a literature. But the number of garden books today is so great that a beginner may well wonder where to begin or whether beginning at all is not too complicated.
These little books were written for exactly such an audience. They are meant for real beginners–old or young–who want simple directions on how to go about having a garden.
The author of them has a threefold and rather spectacular fitness for her task. Years of practical gardening were followed by much study. But neither practice nor theory would have been of any use in writing these books if Mrs. Matschat had not also kept a lively sense of the needs of the beginning gardener. Her simplicity of style and the soundness of her knowledge make her volumes particularly helpful.
The author is the largest single contributor to The Garden Dictionary, to which many of her readers will no doubt graduate. It is, then, a genuine pleasure for the editor of that Dictionary to recommend these books to those who know that primers are the first steps to mastery.
