Francis Joseph "Frank" Sheed, also known by his initials, F. J. Sheed, earned a law degree in his native Sydney, Australia and moved to England, where he worked with the Catholic Evidence Guild as a writer and public speaker. With his wife, Maisie Ward, he formed the Sheed & Ward Publishing House in London in 1926. They later came to America with their children Wilfrid and Rosemary, and settled in Jersey City. Author of numerous books including "A Map of Life" (1933), "Theology and Sanity" (1946), "Society and Sanity" (1953), and "To Know Christ Jesus" (1962), he also translated classics of Christian literature, such as "The Confessions of Saint Augustine" (1944).
