Frank Herbert

Frank Herbert was born in Tacoma, Washington, and educated at the University of Washington, Seattle. He worked a wide variety of jobs—including TV cameraman, radio commentator, oyster diver, jungle survival instructor, lay analyst, creative writing teacher, reporter and editor of several West Coast newspapers—before becoming a full-time writer.

Best known for his epic science fiction novel Dune, and its sequels, Herbert has more than twenty books to his credit. He lived with his family in Washington State, where he turned six acres into an Ecological Demonstration Project showing that a high quality of life can be maintained with a minimal drain on the total energy system. He died in 1986.
