Flicka, Ricka, and Dicka were three little girls who lived in Sweden. They had blue eyes and yellow curls, and they looked very much alike.

One day the girls brought home Aunt Lotta's seven chickens so she could go away to visit her sister. They took good care of the chickens.

One morning, they heard a terrible cackling. A hawk was trying to catch the big red hen named Maisie! The girls saved Maisie. . .but the next morning she was missing! Had the hawk caught Maisie after all?

Originally published in the United States in 1960, Flicka, Ricka, Dicka and the Big Red Hen was one of a series of treasured books created by Swedish author-artist Maj Lindman (1886-1972). She also wrote and illustrated stories about three little Swedish boys, Snipp, Snapp, and Snurr.

Today's young readers will find the warm, wholesome stories of these busy, independent children quaint, but immensely satisfying.
